in this system of equations. it is inconsistent because the 3rd equation has -5 equal to nothing? [ 1 2 -1| 2 ] [ 0 1 3 | 4 ] [ 0 0 0 | -5] which also means that there is no general solution?

yep, the last row translates to the equation 0x + 0y + 0z = -5 or just 0 = -5 which is always false so there are no solutions and this system is inconsistent
