The graduate students filled out the necessary applications, and submitted the required references. How is the comma used incorrectly in the sentence above?

This should be asked in English, not feedback. Also, "submitted the required references." is not an independent clause so it can not attempt to join the two independent clauses because they are not two independent clauses.
