This is still relevant for chemistry @sarah786 for example you fail to provide an answer which actually answer his full question from a chemical perspective. Peripheral proteins are membrane bound proteins through mainly hydrogen bonding and electrostatic bounding with lipids hydrophil heads. (remember that hydrophil relates to a molecules electrostatic abilities)

The function of the carbohydrated chain, can be many, but examples could be to serve as cell-cell adhesion, folding precursor or to prevent the flip-flop mechanism for membrane lipids.
