The moon forms a right triangle with the Earth and the sun during one of its phases, as shown below.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

as shown below???

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A scientist measures the angle x and the distance y between the Earth and the sun. Using complete sentences, explain how the scientist can use only these two measurements to calculate the distance between the moon and the sun.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You have the angle and adjacent side, you can easily calculate the rest. Use your tri functions.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

this is not a math question...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ummm yea it is....

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes it is

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What can you tell me about this?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

y= Distance between earth and sun Secant x= Distance between moon and sun/y y*secant x= distance between moon and sun?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Do you know how to help me on this problem?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

;

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@UnkleRhaukus @phi @ganeshie8 @LastDayWork

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I need help

OpenStudy (unklerhaukus):

tan x = opposite side/ adjacent side

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok I get that....

OpenStudy (unklerhaukus):

which side is known?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I told you earlier :P

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what do you mean which side is known there is a y on one of the sides does that mean its known

OpenStudy (unklerhaukus):

What has the scientist measured already?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the angle x and the distance y between the Earth and the sun

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So you have 2 knowns, now use your trig functions to figure out the other unknowns. Don't over complicate the problem :p

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Sorry but what are the trig functions?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Sinx, cosx, tanx, etc.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

How do i use them in this problem can you show me please

OpenStudy (unklerhaukus):

solve an equation for the distance between earth and moon

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OK..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH.....

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im so confused

OpenStudy (anonymous):

blink.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

shut up

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think you need to brush up on your trigonometry
