Which of the following turned the war in the Pacific in the Allies' favor? Battle of the Coral Sea Battle of Guadalcanal Battle of Iwo Jima Battle of the Java Sea

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Of those choices, Coral Sea, followed by Guadalcanal. Coral Sea put the two most modern Japanese carriers out of service for the Midway operation (something that was unnecessary, as those carriers were only sent to the Coral Sea because the Japanese couldn't think of anything better to do with them - apparently "wait until Midway" never crossed their minds), which proved critical - if Japan had Zuikaku and Shokaku available at Midway, the disparity in forces might have been enough to tip the battle to Japan's favor (even if Lexington had survived and Yorktown unharmed), even if Japan was eventually doomed. Guadalcanal did a number on Japan's naval forces, particularly the critical but underappreciated destroyers and transports. Japan's naval air forces were also gutted, something they could not quickly replace.
