Augusto wants to prove to his parents that watching TV while he does his homework will help him get better grades. He decides to ask 20 of his friends if they watch TV while they do their homework and what their grades are. He finds that his friends who have high grades also watch TV while they do their homework. He tells his parents that he has proven that watching TV while doing homework will cause his grades to improve. What mistake has Augusto made? @mathmale

He did not use a random sample, and he tried to show cause and effect with an observational study. He did not use a random sample, and he tried to show cause and effect with an experiment. He did not separate his friends into different groups, and he didn't apply a treatment. He did not separate his friends into different groups, and he used a survey to collect data.

i think its C

OpenStudy (mathmale):

I'm reluctant to give you a "right" or "wrong" response. Either we could discuss this problem in more depth, or you could go ahead and type in your initial hunch, so that we could move on. Your call.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the second option i know you love explaing and i also love understanding your explanations but right now i hve to get going

OpenStudy (mathmale):

OK. I'll look for you here again soon! Have a great day!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wait what? @mathmale what happened

OpenStudy (mathmale):

My understanding was that you were going to type in " C " as your answer choice and that you had to leave for another commitment.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no i just need you tell me if its right or wrong and i have to leave in 25 minutes

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Again I'd rather not give a right or wrong answer and one reason for that is that I myself am not 100% certain on which answer choice is best.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

soo even if we discuss this in depth you dont know the answer

OpenStudy (mathmale):

One question for you: This guy's reasoning is faulty. Can you explain why?

OpenStudy (mathmale):

I would likely come up with the correct answer after some thought.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

cuz he told his twenty sixs friends to watch tv and do hw and from that he had few that still scored high on the test

OpenStudy (mathmale):

If this were a test and you asked my advice, I'd immediately suggest that you move on to another problem and come back to this one if you found you still had time left.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok so can we just shorten these discussions to do get more questions done?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

uhh so move on to another question?

OpenStudy (mathmale):

I'd vote for A over C. This guy is trying to come up with cause and effect without cmparing the performance of students who don't watch TV while studying. P

OpenStudy (mathmale):

I'd prefer to move on.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok i will post another question :(
