x^2+3x-4 Factoring Trinomials MEDAL REWARDED!!

OpenStudy (31356):

I got (x+4)(x+4) Correct?

OpenStudy (31356):

@jim_thompson5910 @melissaholmes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hi!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No, sorry. (x+4)(x-1)

OpenStudy (31356):

Can you show me how you get it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sure

OpenStudy (31356):

Hi @MelissaHolmes ! :D How was your Valentine's Day?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

4-1 has to equal 3, and 4*-1 has to equal -4

OpenStudy (31356):

Okay

OpenStudy (anonymous):

valentine's day was ok... didn't do much...

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

To factor x^2+3x-4, you need to find two numbers that a) multiply to -4 (last term) AND b) add to 3 (middle coefficient)

OpenStudy (31356):

So Fullerene was correct?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

These two numbers are 4 and -1 4*(-1) = -4 4 + (-1) = 3 That means x^2+3x-4 factors to (x+4)(x-1) The order of the factors does not matter. So we can also say (x-1)(x+4)

OpenStudy (31356):

Okay thanks!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

good job @Fullerene and @jim_thompson5910 :D

OpenStudy (31356):

They sure did! :D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thanks!

OpenStudy (31356):

Can you help me with another one?

OpenStudy (31356):

x^2+8x+16

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

find two numbers that a) multiply to 16 (last term) AND b) add to 8 (middle coefficient)

OpenStudy (31356):

I got (x+4)(x+4) Is that correct?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

Good, x^2+8x+16 factors to (x+4)(x+4) You can write that as (x+4)^2

OpenStudy (31356):

Okay thanks!

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

np

OpenStudy (31356):

Can you help me with several more? thanks in advance.

OpenStudy (31356):

x^2-7x-8

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah

OpenStudy (31356):

I got (x-1)(x+8) Is it correct?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(x - 8)(x + 1) actually

OpenStudy (31356):

Is it @jim_thompson5910 ?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

MelissaHolmes is correct notice how -8 + 1 = -7

OpenStudy (31356):

Oh okay, thanks again!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yay! i got it right! :D

OpenStudy (31356):

Good job! :D

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

whereas, your answer expands out to x^2 + 7x - 8 since -1 + 8 = 7

OpenStudy (31356):

Thanks!

OpenStudy (31356):

x^2-10x+25?

OpenStudy (31356):

I got (x-5)(x-5)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah... i think thats right :D

OpenStudy (31356):

Is it @jim_thompson5910 ?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

yep or \(\Large (x-5)^2\) works too

OpenStudy (31356):

Thanks again, both of you!

OpenStudy (31356):

x^2+4x+4?

OpenStudy (31356):

I got (x+2)(x+2)

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

good

OpenStudy (31356):

Thanks!

OpenStudy (31356):

x^2-4x-12 Is it (x-2)(x+6)?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(x - 6)(x + 2)... i think

OpenStudy (31356):

@jim_thompson5910 @MelissaHolmes

OpenStudy (31356):

Okay thanks!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

:D good job @31356! :)

OpenStudy (31356):

Thanks!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

anytime! :D

OpenStudy (31356):

x^2+10x+25 Is it (x+5)(x+5)

OpenStudy (31356):

@MelissaHolmes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yup! :D

OpenStudy (31356):

Yea!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

:D

OpenStudy (31356):

x^2-8x+16 Is it (x-4)(x-4)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yup again :D

OpenStudy (31356):

Yea!

OpenStudy (31356):

x^2-4x-12? Is it (x-2)(x+6)?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(x - 6)(x + 2) actually..... close, though. XD

OpenStudy (31356):

Oh okay, thanks!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yw :D

OpenStudy (31356):

No more questions left! :D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok! :D :)

OpenStudy (31356):

:D

OpenStudy (31356):

x^2+4x-12 Sorry, need help, forgot this question. lol @MelissaHolmes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so what did u get?

OpenStudy (31356):

:D, thanks for always helping me! :)

OpenStudy (31356):

I am stuck on this one.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ya, you're my friend... friends help each other out...

OpenStudy (31356):

Yes, indeed, my friend, lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and ok... i see what u mean... give me a sec to figure this one out...

OpenStudy (31356):

Ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

does this thing have answer choices?

OpenStudy (31356):

No

OpenStudy (31356):

:(

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hmmm...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OH!!!! (x + 6)(x - 2)

OpenStudy (31356):

Yea! Thanks!

OpenStudy (31356):

:D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you are very welcome! :D

OpenStudy (31356):

My pleasure!
