Mathematics 9 Online
OpenStudy (anonymous):

−4|x + 5| = −16

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

Any ideas?

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

Hint: there are two solutions :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

dont you add x and 5?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

then 5x(-4)

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

$$\Huge x + 5 $$ does mean add x and 5

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

$$\Huge 5x$$ means multiply 5 and x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so it would look like -4(x+5)=-16

OpenStudy (anonymous):

subtract 5 from both sides? then divide by negative 4?

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

Yes, -4(x+5)=-16 is one way of looking at it. But first divide both sides by -4 then second subtract 5 from both sides

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x=-1?

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

Yes, that is one of the solutions :-)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how do i find the second?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is it 9?

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

Nope.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-9?

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

Yes.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

can you help with this one?|x − 2| + 10 = 12

hartnn (hartnn):

when \(|a| = b \) then, \(a=b \: \: or \: \: a=-b\)

hartnn (hartnn):

so, first try to isolate the |...| thingi start by subtracting 10 from both sides :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so the absolute value of x-2 = 2

hartnn (hartnn):

yes! \(|a| = b \implies a=b \:\: or \: \: a=-b \\ |x-2|=2 \implies (x-2)=2 \: \: or \: \: (x-2)=-2\) just solve these 2 equations :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x=4 and x=0?

hartnn (hartnn):

\(\huge \color{red}{\checkmark \quad \ddot \smile}\)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

−3|2x + 6| = −12

OpenStudy (anonymous):

divide -3 from both sides?

hartnn (hartnn):

yes :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

which would be the absolute value of 2x+6=4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the subtract 6 from both sides and divide by two?

hartnn (hartnn):

yes, but there will be 2 equations, right ? due to absolute sign try to find both value of x don't wait for our confirmation, keep on solving, we will stop you if you do any error :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay so then x=-1 and x=-5

hartnn (hartnn):

thats correct! :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i just got al of those wrong though on my quiz?

hartnn (hartnn):

all ? how did you put your answer ? x= -1,-5 x = -1 or -5 x=-1 and -5 ??

hartnn (hartnn):

i re-checked. all the answers we got are actually correct. ideally, your system should accept it as correct...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

its multiple choice

hartnn (hartnn):

what were the choices for the last one? −3|2x + 6| = −12

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i cant look back at it now. i have new numbers now

hartnn (hartnn):

ok, one possible reason might be that x=-1 "and" -5 is incorrect. x cannot take both values at a time. x=-1 "or" -5 is correct thing to say. but i doubt both of these would be in your choices.
