Well, first of all, if you're writing a whole scientific paper, I would write the abstract LAST, since it is usually the toughest to write.

It is basically a condensed summary of your whole paper with a good amount of detail, BUT not important details that you would include in your results & discussion section and so forth. But, giving enough detail of your experiment.
