Can someone please help me with this problem that I am stuck on. (5x – 1) + (10x2 + 7x) - (2x + 4)

terenzreignz (terenzreignz):

What are we supposed to do here?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

adding and subtracting polynomials

terenzreignz (terenzreignz):

Oh, okay, well, if the parentheses is preceded by a + sign (like the second pair of parentheses) then you can treat them as if they weren't there ^_^ \[\Large +(10x^2 + 7x) \qquad \rightarrow \qquad +10x^2+7x\]

terenzreignz (terenzreignz):

However, if the parentheses is preceded by a - sign instead (like the third pair), then remove the parentheses, but IMPORTANTLY, *CHANGE THE SIGN* of every term inside the parenteses: \[\Large -(2x + 4) \qquad \rightarrow \qquad \color{red}-2x\color{red}-4\]

Questions?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So is it 10x2 + 10x - 5?

Looks good
