Could chromosome 3 be homologous with chromosome 1

Homologous chromosomes are those that the same or similar genes on the chromosome. They don't have to be exactly the same alleles (ex. the X chromosome is considered to be homologous to Y chromosome, even though the X chromosome has far more genes than Y). Homologous chromosomes pair up during meiosis where crossing over occurs and that's why they need to have same genes (but can have different alleles).

i think it cannot be otherwise why would scientists call it chromosome 3 . It could be homologous at certain points but not in its entirety.

Homologous chromosomes are two chromosomes that are about the same length, and have their gene types in the same places. In other words, if two chromosomes look like one another, in length, and gene location, then they are HOMOLOGOUS with one another. The word "homologous" is kind of a way to describe the relationship between two chromosomes that look similar.

Chromosomes 1 and 5 can be homologous, but not 1 and 3

@moaraznthanu , if chromosomes 1 and 5 can be homologous then they could pair with each other during mitosis.

in the question it is clearly defined what homologous means . So according to the definition chromosomes 1 and 4 are homologous. Chromosomes 1 and 2 are partially homologous ( they are homologous for locus d and e.)

But if you look at the picture I attached earlier (which I was referring to), chromosomes 1 and 5 are homologous there. It's just that they wouldn't be homologous in real life, I guess.

well according to that image chromosomes 1 and 2 are also homologous , except that instead of g allele chromosome 2 harbors a G allele . Yeah you are right in real life they would not be homologous.
