Japanese Notes
Cognates are a big part of learning a new language, cognates are words that look similar to words in another language. Learning these patterns of cognates can be very helpful if you learn how these work. Before you begin to learn additional cognates, you are going to learn of a few false cognates. These are words in another language that look like a word in English, but do not mean what you expect they will mean. They are also sometimes called false friends because although they seem to be user friendly, though they are actually the opposite. It is most wise to create a list of these words and begin to learn them so that you avoid using them at the wrong time. (Flash cards are a nice way to memorize them!) \[\large\mathcal{\text{False Cognates in Japanese}}\\ \begin{array}{|c|c|c|c|} \hline \textbf{Japanese} &\textbf{English}\\ \hline \text{スマート} &\text{Slender} \\ \text{サラリーマン} &\text{White collar worker} \\ \text{スキンシップ} &\text{Physical contact} \\ \text{マンション} &\text{Condominium} \\ \text{ミンチ} &\text{Ground meat} \\ \text{コンセント} &\text{Plug outlet} \\ \text{シャープペン} &\text{Mechanical pencil} \\ \text{ストーブ} &\text{Space heater} \\ \text{トレーナー} &\text{Sweatshirts} \\ \text{ピーマン} &\text{Green pepper} \\ \text{パンツ} &\text{Briefs} \\ \hline \end{array}\]
