Why does the movie version of a book often differ from the original text of the novel?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

To make the story more intresting. Also so they would be able to create it on the screen. If the book wrote about something impossible to make the people making the film would have to change it alittle.

also, they have to condense the novel to be able to fit into a movie. it is difficult to fit a 700 page book into a 2 hour movie. they have to make sure the movie fits with pop-culture, as a lot of people who go to see the movie haven't even read the book yet. a good example is Percy Jackson. amazing books, and if i hadn't read them i would probably enjoy the movie, but i have, and they are nothing alike. or harry potter. they're very similair. but not exactly the same
