why are the strands of a dna molecule said to be complementary

because 1 nucleobase can only form a hydrogen bond with 1 other nucleobase. There are 4 nucleobases so there are 2 pairs: G+C and A+T. When there is a G on the first strand, there will be a C on the other strand at the same place. CTAG will be complementary to GATC. Check the attached image.
