I heard about this thing on OS where you can donate $10 to block all ads and make your own rank name next to your progressing default one. It doesn't really have much of a use though, because I have ad-blocker..

You can instantly and always block ads that interfere with study-time, and the price is just high though for the OS deal! As soon as I saw ads on this site...

mmm at this point, the subscription thing is more for the people who really love and want to financially support OS, not necessarily for the perks.

The logic is that you want to support OpenStudy.
It's a small company and to keep OS running, they need a revenue. This revenue is generated by ads and subscriptions. The ads are there to keep this site free. If everyone blocks the ads, OS would be forced to ask money for using the site. Would you like that?
So if you'd encourage everyone to use adblocker, you're kinda ruining OpenStudy for the rest.

Like a kind of indie-go-go type of thing. Hard to say. Like an online fundraiser that is separate from the site, but still very much supported.

The problem is that most of the users on OpenStudy are minors who are not likely to donate money. That's why ads work, the users don't have to do anything and still indirect pay for using the site by viewing ads.

Yes it kinda makes it a sell-out, but there's no other choice.
OS used to rely on funds from different foundations, but these funds came to an end.
So they had to create new ways to keep the site running. Like it or not but ads are the only way.
