the sum of 3 consecutive even integers is 462 find the integers

You could use algebra or you could just guess. Which do you prefer?

algebra

Let x = the smallest of the even integers. The other integers in the consecutive sequence will then be x + 2 and x + 4 So, x + (x + 2) + (x + 4) = 462 Solve that for x you get 3x + 6 = 462 3x = 456 x = 152 So the answer is: 152, 154, 156 Guessing is MUCH easier, by the way

Think. We want to add 3 even integers that are pretty close together and get 462. What is 462 divided by 3? It's 154 So try 154, 156, 158. Add em up. Too big Next try 152, 154, 156. Works! Finished
