How did the Treaty of Versailles guarantee future conflict in Europe?

Its punitive measures against Germany would exacerbate feelings of bitterness, levy economic hardship on its people that the Weimar Republic would struggle to fight (and ultimately lose), and humiliate an entire nation by gutting its military while taking away its colonies. Germany was at the top of the world prior to WW1 -- they were like a superpower. After WW1, they were reduced to a third-rate nation with bits and pieces of it around the world given away to the victors.
