I don't know how accurate this can be without having the actual lesson, but similarity: in both you are trying to persuade your audience to agree with your argument or proposition, even though in one you are speaking and in the other you are writing the purpose is the same. one difference is obviously that in one you are writing and the other you are speaking so a difference is that you most likely have a different audience. another difference is that you can get more into detail in writing an essay, while you can provide more media themed examples and visuals in a speech.
