if one object is thrown vertically and the other dropped, when will the two objects reach the same level?

I'm afraid your question does not have enough information. Please give diagram, or complete description of the problem... In general you will have a quadratic equation in t, having 2 solutions. One solution is normally when a vertically moving object is on the way up, and the other is when it is on the way down. The actual equation depends on the details of the question...
