3x^2+19x-14 ______________ x^2-49 Simplify each expression and state any excluded values help?!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

3x^2+19x-14 over x^2-49

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Factor both out, and see if two factors cancel.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how do i do the top?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(3x +/- y)(x +/- z) I gave you two, find y and z

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What answer did you get?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i got -7 for the z but i cant seem to get y for (3x+y ) so it looks like this mostly (3x+y)( x+-7)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

try y = -2 :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Factored, it is (3x-2)(x+7), now just get rid of the factors of the denominator which cancel.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What do you get in the end?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohh so its (3x-2)(x+7) or do u have to cancel the x+7 also?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[\frac{ (3x-2)(x+7 }{ (x-7)(x+7) }\] (x+7) / (x+7) = 1, so they cancel. In the end, you have: (3x-2) / (x-7)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok thanks! i got it now
