5 6/8 = (5 x 8 + 6)/8 = 46/8

x - 3 1/4 = 5 6/8 -- turn to improper fractions
x - 13/4 = 46/8 -- add 13/4 to both sides to get x by itself
x - 13/4 + 13/4 = 46/8 + 13/4 -- combine like terms
x = 46/8 + 13/4 -- common denominator is 8
x = 46/8 + 26/8
x = 72/8 which reduces to 9
