You can simplify it to begin with. ie there are two plus 4 and one minus 4, so just one plus 4 remains

Look at the arithmetic operators within the expression 4×4+4×4+4-4×4.
You'll see both addition (+) and multiplication (×).  "Order of operations" rules require that you multiply BEFORE you add.  

Thus, 4*4=16 is done BEFORE 4*4 + 4*4.

4×4+4×4+4-4×4 becomes:

 16  + 16 + 4 - 16, or
       32     +4  -16, or       36-16, or 20.
