First change them to common denominators\[\frac{ 1 }{ 4 } \rightarrow \frac{ 2 }{ 8 }\] then your equation would look like this \[\frac{ 5 }{ 8 }-\frac{ 2 }{ 8 }\] from here you do basic subtraction and you get \[\frac{ 3 }{ 8 }\] and it cant be simplified so that would be your answer.
