Adding and subtracting with unlike denominators. Add or subtract
How much longer than \[\frac{ 9 }{ 16 } \] inch is \[\frac{ 7 }{ 9 } inch? \]
you would have to subtract \[\color{blue}{ \frac{7}{9}-\frac{9}{16} }\] to find the difference between the 2. find the least common denominator, it would be the product of 16 and 9. \[\huge\color{blue}{ \frac{7}{9} -\frac{9}{16}} \] \[ \huge\color{blue}{ \frac{7 \color{red} { \times 16 }}{9 \color{red} { \times 16 }} - \frac{9 \color{red} { \times 9 } }{16 \color{red} { \times 9 }} } \] \[\huge\color{blue}{ \frac{112}{144} - \frac{81}{144} }\]now the denominators are the same \[\huge\color{blue}{ \frac{112-81}{144} }\] \[\huge\color{blue}{ \frac{31}{144} }\] and there is your answer :)
