in need of help with my geometry homework.. Use the following steps for problems 1–4. 1. 3(x + 4) = 8x – 18 2. 3x + 12 = 8x – 18 3. 12 = 5x – 18 4. 30 = 5x 5. 6 = x 1. Give the reason for step 2. A. Distributive property of equality B. Subtraction property of equality C. Reflexive property of equality D. Substitution property of equality
anyone know any of the reasonings for each step? all help is much appreciated
To get from step 1 to step 2: distributive property -This is because you distribute the 3 to all values in the parenthesis To get from step 2 to step 3: -subtract 3x from both sides. This will get all x values on one side of the equation. To get from step 3 to step 4: -add 18 to both sides. This will get all non-x values on the side of the equation where x's are not. To get from step 4 to step 5: -Divide the coefficient in front of x ("coefficient" is a term to describe the number in front of x) from both sides. This will give you your value of x which is the goal of solving the equation. Remember that the big picture of algebra is just simply getting your variable values (like x) on one side of your equation by addition and subtraction to both sides of the equation and then using division to solve for the variable. Sorry if this is a long explanation, hoped I helped!
