Hmm...well it is impossible to say how far he traveled when we don't know when he left...and we cannot compare to John when we do not know any information about John...So I'm not too sure here...sorry :(

So ...john leaves at 8:00 am...and rides 15ft/sec ...well we know there are 60 seconds in 1 minute so that is 15 x 60 = 900 ft/min   ...

Now at 8:10...a.k.a 10 minutes after John leaves...he has traveled 10 x 900 = 9000 feet
And at 8:20 a.k.a 20 minutes after he leave...he has traveled 20 x 900 = 18000 feet

Now on to what you asked..Pete...
He travels at 20 ft/sec or 20 x 60 = 1200 ft/min ...

So at 8:10 a.k.a 10 minutes after HE leaves..he travels 1200 x 10 = 12000 ft
and at 8:20 a.k.a 20 minutes after he leaves...that is 1200 x 20 = 24000 ft

And to ask...if he has caught up with john...yes he has
