Gaseous exchange in the lungs takes place by diffusion. The exchange, intake of oxygen and excretion of carbon dioxide, occurs at the alveolar surface where oxygen is absorbed into the blood stream as carbon dioxide is exhaled. The difference in pressure between the alveoli and the blood capillaries enables diffusion to occur.
