@kewlgeek555 <-- OP in math

OpenStudy (kewlgeek555):

If you multiply or didivde a negative number in the process you would have to flip the inequalitiy sign.

OpenStudy (the_fizicx99):

>_< when you multiply or divide by a negative number you always flip the sign.

OpenStudy (mathmale):

In solving the inequality -4x < 8, you would need to flip over the inequality symbol. I'd say there's more than one way in which to solve this problem. Personally, I'd ADD 4x to both sides, obtaining 0 < 8 + 4x. Then I'd subtract 8 from both sides, obtaining -8<4x, or -2<x. compare this method to that of flipping over the inequality sign. The results should be identical.

OpenStudy (mackenzie2013):

Thank you !

OpenStudy (mathmale):

My pleasure. So: You can, but do not always have to, flip over that inequality sign. This depends upon the method you choose for solving the inequality.
