7. What else can scientists determine from studying the light of a star?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Other than temperature I mean.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how we got here.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

*arris04 i don't understand. do u mean the Big Band Theory? because i mean things that are proven, not theories.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

How about this one? What is an HR diagram is used for? An HR Diagram is used to put stars into categories by…. I partially answered it. can u guys help?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

never mind i got it. What is an HR diagram is used for? An HR Diagram is used to put stars into categories by absolute magnitude and surface temperature. What about the first question i asked?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

IS THERE ANYONE THERE WHO CAN HELP ME??????? PLEASE SOMEONE REPLY!!!!!!!!!!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Using diffraction patterns, the emission and absorption spectra can be measured, which correspond to particular elements found in the star.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

In addition, if the spectra are shifted, that is evidence of motion either toward or away from the observer (look up "red shift.")

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Look at color, tell what chemicals are there.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh! ok thanks!!! would you like a medal?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

eh, medals are cool. I'll take one if you've one to spare. :-)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh to spare... sorry i'm not used to the website.. I thought I had one... sorry i feel like a jerk- and this is even "jerky"er.... How do you read an HR diagram?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

First of all, re: "do u mean the Big [Bang] Theory? because i mean things that are proven, not theories." - You might not understand what the word theory means. There is no such thing as "proven" in science - there are facts, which are observed and there are theories to explain those facts. Anything determined from observation relies on theories.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

An HR (Hertzsprung–Russell) diagram relates color to brightness and temperature.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That's what I meant- i'm not very good at explaining myself... :/
