Ribbon costs $0.45 per foot. A sewing project calls for 20.5 feet of ribbon. To the nearest cent, what will be the cost of the ribbon for the project?

OpenStudy (kamibug):

So you want to know how much it will cost to but 20.5 feet of ribbon. They tell you that 1 foot equals $0.49. What do you think you gotta do?

OpenStudy (kittyjosh):

To solve this, you can set up a proportion. \[\frac{$0 .45 }{ 1 foot } = \frac{ x }{20.5 }\] To solve a proportion you cross multiply, so 1x=$0.45x20.5 1x=$9.225, then divide both sides by 1. x=$9.225 It would cost $9.23 to pay for the ribbon in this project.
