explain how polarized sunglasses work?

OpenStudy (farcher):

Light when it is reflected from a surface becomes partially polarised. Polarised sunglasses have Polaroids which are arranged so that their plane of polarisation is at right angles to that of the reflected light. The Polaroid sunglasses absorb this light. A good way to observe this effect is to compare the light reflected off the surface of a pond whilst wearing and not wearing the sun glasses. The sunglasses reduce glare.
