What does a buffer do?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

buffers prevent changes in pH. Body cells function normally within a narrow pH range of 6.8-7.4. A change in pH beyond this range adversely affects cellular function.

OpenStudy (aaronq):

you're missing a key point, that it limits pH changes upon addition of \( small\) amounts of acid or base. It wont prevent changes in pH due to large quantities of acid or base.
