He became popular because he was an amazing military commander. He was very, very successful in battles, and defeated many countries. After Maximilien de Robespierre fell out of favor, he became popular with the Directory, and saved the country from counter-revolutionary forces. He also defeated the Royalists, and refused to allow the country to be again turned into a monarchy.
