Identify the solution(s) of the system of equations, if any. x + 5y = 6 4x - 5y = 4

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Seeing that the terms in y are identical except for signs, I'd immediately add the two equations together. This would eliminate y entirely and allow you to solve for x. Please try it. This method is called "elimination through addition/subtraction."

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Once you've done this, you'll need to plug your value for x into either one of the 2 given equations to determine the value of y.

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

I'll add one more thing: having found your solutions for x and y, you should try them in BOTH equations to make sure you haven't made an error. It is possible to come up with a "solution" which will satisfy some of the equations in a system without satisfying all of the equations.

Great, thank you!

OpenStudy (mathmale):

My great pleasure.
