What is an antecedent of a pronoun? My teacher tried explaining it to me but I am still confused. Please help.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I told John he would be the antecedent to the pronoun in this sentence. "he" refers to someone, the antecedent "John."

OpenStudy (anonymous):

But what makes John the antecedent? @douglaswinslowcooper

OpenStudy (anonymous):

"ante" means "before" and "cedent" means "coming." "John" has to come before "he," so that the reader knows whom "he" refers to.

Oh okay! Thank you so much, it makes a lot more sense now.

I am delighted to learn that! Well done.
