Which cake has a larger area, a round 8-inch cake or a square 9-inch cake? How much larger is it? HINT: Find the area of each cake. For the Square, remember that the Area is the length of a side x the length of a side. For a round case, remember that Area is pi * radius squared. The radius will be 4 inches because the cake is 8 inches wide. Use 3.14 for pi. Find each area, determine which is bigger and then subtract the smaller from the larger to find how much bigger. • The area of the square cake is larger by about 31 in.2 • The area of the round cake is larger by about 11 in.2 • The area of the square cake is larger by about 11 in.2
