would anyone know how to do these?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (rosedewittbukater):

What are the questions?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

find x,y, a, b

OpenStudy (rosedewittbukater):

I haven't done geometry for a while, so I don't remember the names of the specific theorems and rules. But x would be 120º because of the opposite angle.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah i know everything but y

OpenStudy (rosedewittbukater):

All the angles in a triangle add up to 180º. So do 180-120-38.

OpenStudy (rosedewittbukater):

Y is 22º

OpenStudy (anonymous):

why are you subtracting

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh but what about the 7

OpenStudy (rosedewittbukater):

Because the angle measures in a triangle always add up to 180º. Does that make sense?

OpenStudy (rosedewittbukater):

7 is the length of the line separating the shape into two triangles. SInce it's the longest line, it's also the hypotenuse.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh thats not an angle ok thanks so much!!

OpenStudy (rosedewittbukater):

No problem!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

would you also be able to help me with 10?

OpenStudy (rosedewittbukater):

Sure! X is a right angle so that will be 90º.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how would you find b

OpenStudy (rosedewittbukater):

Then you can do 180-90-45 to find y.

OpenStudy (rosedewittbukater):

For b, you need to find the length of the side on the triangle on the right. Do you know the pythagorean theorem?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah

OpenStudy (rosedewittbukater):

Actually, since the triangle on the right has a 90º angle, and two 45º angles, you can know that the two shorter sides of the triangle have the same length.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so 72=c^2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

its a decimal

OpenStudy (rosedewittbukater):

Sorry I made a mistake. B is 4.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how do you know

OpenStudy (rosedewittbukater):

The whole shape is a rectangle. So b is equal to the opposite side. The opposite side is 4 because it is the leg of a triangle with two 45º angles and a 90º angle. What I mean is that whenever there are two 45º angles in a right triangle, the legs (shorter sides) have equal lengths.

OpenStudy (rosedewittbukater):

I hope this is making some sense...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay i got it thanks!

OpenStudy (rosedewittbukater):

Ok good! Do you know how to find a?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah a is 9

OpenStudy (rosedewittbukater):

Actually it's 10. Add the bottom two numbers together. 4+6.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh yeah i got that i was thinking 10 but saw a 9 haha
