OpenStudy (anonymous):

How do you do this? What are the values of x and y?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I take it you need help? Just a guess...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol yeah I don't know how to solve that

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Anywho, whoever made this question was nice enough to give you three, coinciding, similar triangles. Since angle BAC = angle DBC, the three possible triangles are similar. Now to avoid confusion, its probably better to draw it out. |dw:1393392359380:dw|

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay i see where your going

OpenStudy (anonymous):

now just use the properties of similar triangles to solve for your variables For example: \[\frac{ 15+x }{ 17 } = \frac{ 17 }{ 15 }\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

once you find x, you can use pythagorean theorem (y^2 = x^2 + 8^2) to solve for y

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okayy… would that be 15x/17 = 17/15…… 17(17)=15x(15)? 0r does 17/17 cancel out leaving 15x(15)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so you are solving for x so first multiply both sides by 17: x+15 = 17* 17/15 then subtract 15 from both sides x= ((17*17)/15)-15

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so it would be 4.26 or 4.3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

4.26666666666666666666..... it goes on for a while..... I'm not sure if you need an exact answer or not, but I'd leave the rounding until the end. Try and keep as many digits as you can or keep it in fractional form until then end!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wait but my answer choices are x=136/15, y=17/15 x=64/15, y=17/15 x=8/15, y= 136/15 x=64/15, y= 136/15

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so i don't understand?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so you probably want to keep your answers in fractional form then. first put everything in a common denominator 17*17/15 = 289/15. 15*(15/15) = 225/15 then evaluate and solve for x x = 289/15-225/15 = 64/15

OpenStudy (anonymous):

then go back to Pythagorean theorem (y^2 = x^2 + 8^2) to solve for y. y = sqrt(x^2 +8^2) = sqrt((64/15)^2+64) which will simplify to 136/15. the last answer choice is correct

your perfffect thnx!
