British soldiers killed five Americans in the event known as the Boston Massacre, but John Adams, an American, chose to defend the soldiers in court. Why would Adams make that choice? He did not approve of the methods of the protesters. He knew he would need such experience to become President. He wanted to show the British that the colonists believe in fair trials. He wanted the British to win the case so they would leave the colonists alone.
