The ratio of pens to pencils in Mrs. Bosworth's desk is 3:1. What does this mean?

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

that means that there are 3 times as many pens as pencils.

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

Like number of pencils would be "x" and number of pencils would be 3x.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so For every 3 pencils, there is 1 pen.

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

Are you asked to find something based on the above information ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The ratio of pens to pencils in Mrs. Bosworth's desk is 3:1. What does this mean? There are 3 more pens than pencils. For every 3 pens, there is 1 pencil. For every 3 pencils, there is 1 pen. There are 2 more pens than pencils.

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

No, for every 3 pens there is 1 pencil. the number of pens is 3 times greater than number of pencils.

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

Clear, or need a little more help?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thats good i have other questions too

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

Sure

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Roger completed a probability experiment with a coin. He flipped the coin 32 times, and it landed on tails eight times. He looked at the results of his experiment to determine the ratio of heads outcomes to tails outcomes. The ratio of heads to tails in reduced form is to .

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i have to give 2 numbers to go in the box

OpenStudy (anonymous):

r u there

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

Ok, so he flipped the coin 32. it can land ONLY on EITHER heads or tails. it landed on tails 8 times out of the 32 times, so the remaining times it landed on heads. and the remaining number of times is 24 (I get this by subtracting 32- total number of times form 8 number of times it landed on tails). i Now we know the coin landed 24 times on heads and 8 on tails the ratio of heads to tails is 24:8 reduce the number by dividing each side by 3, you get ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so 3:1

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

sorry by dividing by 8... yeah you are correct!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

kool

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i have other questions but if u r buisy than its ok

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

Yeah, I am currently doing something parallel to this, scanning fixing my comp and etc., but what you can do is open a new question, and I think people will come to rescue! if you have any tech. questions, ask here in comments, will be happy to help

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok thx

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

yw, np :)
