What was China's one child policy? And how did it affect the population ?

OpenStudy (lena772):

Please post in Geography or History for further questions. Chinese people were only allowed one child. If they had more, a fine was to be paid. This helped slow down the rapid increasing population China had. They had to do this in order to sustain themselves. This caused the population to grow slower than it was, and also resulted in a huge gender gap. Many parents wanted boys because men were seen as capable and strong. They would kill baby girls and try until they had a boy.
