If f(x) varies directly with x and f(x) = 3 when x = 12, then what is the value of f(x) when x = 40?

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

Two ways: 1) find the constant of variation, then plug new value of \(x\) into formula 2) because it is direct variation, multiply value of \(f(12)\) by \(\frac{40}{12}\)

how do i the 1st one?
