what is the theme of the poem "the bells" by anne sexton?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The Bells, by poet Anne Sexton, was one of a series of poems that revealed the deep level of the poet's battle with depression. Anne Sexton belonged to a group of poets who were writing in the mid 20th century. This particular group of poets were referred to as the confessional poets, because so much of their work was intensely personal. The themes in much of this work centered on feelings of depression, lack of energy, and lack of motivation. Anne Sexton took her own life on October 4, 1974.
