Well that's an okay answer but That was only the first answer on this question from yahoo which I'm sure is where you got it from but if you scroll down to the second answer which in my opinion is way better and gives more information you would see that they got benefits like protection by trading sugar with cuba

How did Puerto Rico become a U.S. territory, while Cuba became a protectorate?  Explain the difference between a territory and a protectorate.
