Kurtz was practically celebrated for his success in collecting ivory, so it is odd that someone celebrated is to be feared. However, I think the real reason he chooses the path less traveled by choosing Kurtz is because he is entering a world full of danger and the unknown and misunderstood people. Kurtz is one of the only things from his familiar world, and yet he chooses that to fear?
