Let U = { New York (NY), Illinois (IL), Arizona (AZ), Kansas (KS), California (CA), Texas (TX), Virginia (VA), Maryland (MD), Florida (FL) } D = {NY, IL, AZ, VA} E = { NY, IL, AZ, VA, FL } F = {AZ, CA, TX, FL } a. Is D ⊂ E? Why or why not? b. Is D ⊆ U? Why or why not? c. Is F ⊆ F? Why or why not? d. Is F equivalent to D? Why or why not? e. How many subsets does the Universal Set U have?

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

If A is a subset of B then everything in A is in B If A is a proper subset of B then everything in A is in B and there is something in B that is not in A. If A equals B then A is a subset of B and B is a subset of A. The universal set would be the set of all states in the US. How many are there?

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

so is D proper in E?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thats the one i was having trouble in. I would say yes or D is "a like" to E since E has FL in it.

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

D is proper in E D is a subset of E but E is not a subset of D
