I'd actually go with (B), that they had civil wars supported by foreign countries. 

China resumed its civil war between Mao Zedong's Communists (who were tentatively supported by the Soviets) and Chiang Kai Shek's Nationalists (which were eventually supported by the US). Similarly, Korea was divided into the Communist North (which was favored by both the Soviets and, eventually, Red China) and democratically supported South (which the US supported as a part of its containment strategy). 

Even though the civil war ended in China with a Communist victory, North and South Korea are technically still in a state of war. The treaty they signed was only a cease fire treaty.
