What are some reasons for NOT going into the Civil War in 1861? What could the states have done to avoid going into war?

in all honesty; unless an "compromise" that ensured southern states to continue slavery and their ways of living, the civil war possibly could've been prevented. However, there were so many tensions leading up to the civil war; thus the civil war is ultimately inevitable.
