In the 1850s, why was the territory of Kansas known as "Bleeding Kansas?" Many slaves rebelled violently against their owners. White settlers attacked Native Americans who were living there. There was violence between pro-slavery and anti-slavery forces as they fought for control of the state. Many settlers fought against each other in disputes over land.
