how do we know that plants release co2?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Animals and plants have breathing apparatus, and smaller organisms perform respiration of the epidermis (skin). Therefore, plants also breathe. In photosynthesis the plant absorbs CO2 (carbon dioxide) and release O2 (oxygen) to the environment. In the process of respiration, the plant performs the opposite, it absorbs oxygen and releases carbon dioxide.
